Join experts from our Property Law Committee for an update on the latest news and changes in ACT property law. In the first part of this session, Ed Campbell will outline the changes to the standard retirement village conveyancing contract and the principles behind those changes. Alfonso del Rio will present the second part of the session, covering the practical application of building contracts. Time will be given to questions from the audience.

Ethical issues come up in property law and estate law cases more often than you might think. In this session, Katie Binstock, Partner at Thomson Geer, will give an update on recent court decisions and ethical questions relevant to property lawyers. Katie is the Society's legal adviser in respect of our regulatory role regarding conduct and discipline matters, and has years of experience in ethical issues.

She advises the ACT Law Society in relation to the investigation and prosecution of complaints, external intervention and granting/renewal of local practising certificates. Aside from acting for the Law Society, Katie has a busy Wills and Estates practice. She is the Chair of the ACT Law Society Elder Law and Succession Law Committee and authored the ACT Law Handbook chapter on Older People and the Law. Katie has also tutored Lawyers, Justice and Ethics at the Australian National University.

Shaun Lonergan (B.Com, Grad Dip. App Fin, M.Com, M.Tax, Chartered Tax Advisor) is currently looking after Duties Compliance at the ACT Revenue Office. He started his career in stock broking, moving to Investor Relations at Westpac. Shaun spent multiple years as a corporate valuer at the ATO, which started his career in compliance, focusing mainly on mining companies. He was bought to Canberra by the Department of Treasury to work on the rescinded/failed MRRT (mining tax), and following that, he stayed in Canberra, returning to a compliance role at the ATO. He has also worked as a private client tax advisor.
